Day 2 - Wednesday, September 29, 2010
Today we started the Canadian Achievement Tests (CAT-4) which are required by the government and our school division for grades 3 and 6 in an elementary school. The 6's did the longest component of the Math today. I was pleased and impressed with the perseverance exhibited by all of the students. Tomorrow we will do the Computations section. There are several Language Arts sections to be completed with Mr. English as well. The grade 3's are also doing these tests. If a student is absent during this testing it is required that it be made up, which will complicate the process of getting everything completed by Thanksgiving, so it is important that you are at school, well-fed and well-rested to be able to do your very best on these tests.
On the homework list is:
Math corrections, Art grid drawing, Science and Social. Some of these assignments are now past due and marks are being deducted by Mrs. David for late work.
Miss Riddell has posted notice of a French test for next Tuesday. Make sure you are prepared for that, too.
Don't forget to mark your calendars for the Fall Fair and Trade Show starting on Friday, October 1st. Some of our 6's have signed up to work on Friday after school. Do your job well.
Enjoy the warm days we are having.

Day 6 - Tuesday, September 7, 2010
Welcome back. I hope you had an enjoyable long weekend.
Grade 6 started into their Math texts today - beginning to learn about patterns and relationships in tables of values (input/output tables). Try to look for patterns in numbers in every day life. Some students will have a bit of homework to do. The question assigned is Practice, page 8, number 1, parts (a) and (b). Follow all of the instructions. Part (a) was done together and was left on the board as an example.
There is a Music note about a Band Picture.
Don't forget about the Science for tomorrow.
Student Fees still need to be paid by several students.
Today the first book order forms were sent home. There are four this time, but after this month, I will usually only send the Arrow and the Teen Reading Club. Book Orders are due on Friday, Sept. 10th and unless I receive a phone call or a note of explanation from a parent, I will proceed with the order and not accept "late" orders.
All the immunization forms have come in, for which I thank you for the quick response.
Mrs. Parkinson will be here on Friday for a presentation to the Grade 6 class regarding the immunizations.

Monday, August 20, 2010 - Day 1
Welcome Back! Welcome to grade 6. We had a good, but busy day getting organized and starting new classes with new teachers.
A letter outlining expectations from me, Mrs. Soloski, as well as registration forms was sent home today in the student Day Planners. Please complete the form and become familiar with the contents of the letter as soon as you can. Parents are asked to initial the student Day Planners and students will hand them in on my cabinet each morning for me to see notes and to initial, as well. Parents, please use the Day Planner as a communication tool about times students will be absent so that homework can be prepared ahead of time.
On Friday, September 3rd the UPS SCC is hosting a welcome breakfast beginning at about 8:00 a.m. Then, if the weather cooperates, the students will be taking a tour of the canola field out by the NorthWest Terminal. Students need to come dressed for the weather and it is essential that proper footwear be worn and long pants as the canola stubble can be very scratchy.
The next PhysEd class is on Day 4 (check your timetable) and the students should have the required change of clothing for that class.

Back to normal for a school day. The grade 6 students who were present completed the Assessment for Learning Field Test today. They completed it within the hour given. If you were absent today, you will need to catch up this assessment as soon as you are back to school.
There is not too much time left for the Junior Genius work to be done. Twelve (12) days before the presentation day and only 4 classes left for the work, so you will have to make sure you are doing all that you can to work on your own.
Poems for Music Festival are also coming along, however, certain students need to work very hard to learn the words. You know who you are and what areas need the most work. Practice, practice, practice!!
Science is for homework.
See you tomorrow.

Day 1 - Wednesday, March 17, 2010
It was a green kinda day! Happy St. Patrick's Day. The grade 4,5,6 curling went well, but I noticed that the grade 6's were very tired this afternoon. They tried to stay working, but I think a really early night and a good sleep will help alot.
Tomorrow we are conducting the AFL (Assessment for Learning) Math Field Test. This is a grade 5 level test for grade 6's to complete to help advise the Ministry of Learning how this test could be improved before it is used as an assessment tool for Grade 5 in 2011.
The students also realized today, when we were practicing our Music Festival Choral Speaking poems, just how much they actually have memorized and where they need to work on the memorization. There is a lot of work to do in the next week for this work to be up to standard.
SCC Sub Lunch is tomorrow.
Also, tomorrow is supposed to be quite a lot cooler than the last several days, so make sure you are dressed for the weather.
Tomorrow we are conducting the AFL (Assessment for Learning) Math Field Test. This is a grade 5 level test for grade 6's to complete to help advise the Ministry of Learning how this test could be improved before it is used as an assessment tool for Grade 5 in 2011.

Day 2 - Wednesday, March 10, 2010
We have continued to prepare for the Math test. I see on the Reflecting on Learning sheets the students handed in that Writing a Clear Explanation of a procedure using appropriate terminology was marked the most often as "having trouble with this". These are the "How do you know" "Explain your strategy" type questions. All of the students have struggled with this, some more than others. I told them to write as if I did not know anything at all and so that once they were done the explanation, I would have to know how to do it.
There are a few Art designs that need to be finished up for Friday and handed in.
The Book Fair ends tomorrow.
Junior Genius projects are in "high gear" and students need to stay very focussed on what needs to be done and the deadlines.
Thanks for checking in.

Day 3 - Tuesday, March 2, 2010
What great March weather we are having. I wonder if the groundhog was incorrect in his prediction.
Students have Math corrections. I have been very disappointed in the effort to hand in accurate and complete Math work and subsequently, the lack of effort to do any corrections.
If students are having difficulty, they need to make an effort to come earlier in the morning to get help or stay after school. Unfortunately, with the many other things going on in the school, I am not always available to help at recess and noon. So, the onus is on the student to make some effort to ask for help instead of just ignoring the work and hope it will fix itself. We are way too close to the end of the year to let things slide.
Student-Led Conference schedule of times note will go home tomorrow. Please watch for it.
A Sub Lunch is coming up and forms need to be returned with the correct $$ by Friday.
Memorize the Festival poems.
The Book Fair is next week so I will not be sending home book orders until later in the month.
Tomorrow is the last day to purchase Telemiracle helping hands.

Day 3 - Monday, February 22, 2010
Welcome back. I hope you had a good break. I don't see much of the grade 6's on Day 3 so I did not have a chance to find out how they spent their week off. Mine was extremely busy on school work, mostly, and at Convention.
The students have a Health assignment due for Friday morning.
Students should also make a concerted effort to memorize the first 8 stanzas of our two poems for Music Festival. Our time to practice as a group will be to focus on expression and enunciation not learning the words.
Also, there are Telemiracle Helping hands available for purchase at the school for $1.00 each. Teachers have them in their classrooms.

Both of these poems can be found on-line so it should be easy for you to work on this over the break - even if you don't have the paper copy with you.
One more day before the break!!

Science take home work is due for Thursday.
Pizza lunch forms are due Thursday as are Craft Club forms.
Please make sure that your children are dressed for the weather. I was on outside supervision today and there were way too many children outside without proper clothing and footwear to keep them sufficiently warm.

Day 4 - Wednesday, January 20, 2010
It was a very busy. The 6's spent the entire afternoon researching Haiti. It was an intensive 2 and a half hours, but a great job was done and we have a wonderful bulletin board display in the main entrance of the school to showcase our efforts. Take time to have a look if you come to the school tomorrow for the "money line" fundraiser in the afternoon or drop in and see it whenever you have a chance. We hope it will stay up for a week or so, yet.
Music test tomorrow.
Math test Friday.
Skills Bank booklets are to be finished before the end of next week - so work on them every day.
Most importantly - bring whatever money you can spare for the money line tomorrow. It all goes to the Red Cross to help the people of Haiti.

Day 2 - Friday, January 8, 2010
The students worked hard today in my classes. The process of long division with and without decimals is finally starting to come more easily and the students are getting more confident. Thanks for sticking with it.
Today, a Math assignment was given for pages 106 and 107. Students need to be finished to the end of question 8 for Monday. If they finish the whole assignment for Monday that is okay, too.
The students also have been given their final mapping assignment in Social Studies. They will have sufficient class time to get it done, however, it will have to be done for the end of class on Tuesday, so pacing is important.
