Day 3 - Thursday, December 18, 2008

This was a terrific day. The students did an awesome job on the Christmas Concert program. Thank you for all of your hard work.

Don't forget that tomorrow some schoolwork needs to be finished up and left for me to correct over the break.

Have a wonderful holiday everyone and see you "next year". School resumes on Monday, January 5th, 2009, and it will be Day 5.

Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Day 1 - Tuesday, December 16, 2008

Just a brief update:
Math - be finished questions up to and including R 39, including corrections.
Social - work on the questions and mapping in What in the World? if you have spare time.
French - quiz on clothing on Wed., Dec. 17th.

Please come dressed for being outside. That does mean boots, mitts, toques, jackets or coats, maybe a scarf, and, yes, even ski pants.

For Christmas Concert day - reindeer, please wear shirts in brown, beige, white or black (neutral colors). Wearing your slightly better clothing would be appreciated, too.

Remember, concert times are 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Thursday.

See you then.

Friday, December 12, 2008

Day 5 - Friday, December 12, 2008

Hooray!! It is Friday!!

Some students have Math pages to finish up. Check to make sure that you have all questions done up to and including R 37 for Monday. You also have a French Quiz on clothing to prepare for on Wednesday, December 17th.

Rehearsal for the Christmas Concert play went well today.

Please remember to have appropriate clothing at school for the weather. Especially since the weather is to get much, much colder for next week. We have been spoiled so far this winter, but we will be treated not very kindly if the forecast is accurate.

Have a great weekend. See some of you at the Carol Festival on Sunday at 2:00 at UCHS.

Still a few raffle tickets out there, let's get that wrapped up this weekend and have all ticket stubs and money in on Monday to Mrs. Knowles.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Day 3 - Wednesday, December 10, 2008

Once again the internet is not cooperating at school. There is a small amount of Math homework that some students may have. Some did not completed their work from Monday, so they may have more. All questions from R34 and all of R35 needs to be done completely for Friday morning. Most of R35 was done in class.

If you missed today, you will also have the What in the World? Map Assignment - Parts A & B to do.

Also, Miss Martin asked that the Music booklet be completed for Thursday.

Raffle ticket money must be handed in to Mrs. Knowles tomorrow.

All props need to be at school for Friday's practice. The students know what they are responsible for.

Christmas Concert full dress rehearsal is on Tuesday, so please try to be at school for that whole day. Concert times on Thursday are 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. It should last about an hour. Check your newsletter for further information.

That's all for now.

Monday, December 8, 2008

Monday, December 8, 2008 - Day 1

It's beginning to look and feel alot like Christmas now that the snow is here.

There is a little homework in Math. We completed pages R31, R32, R33 and the first part of R34. Most students should only have to finish #3 & #4 on R34 for Wednesday.

Some students still owe Music homework to Miss Martin (it was due last week).

Tomorrow is pizza lunch for those who ordered. There are still teachers wanting to buy a ticket on the Sled full of Toys fundraiser.

The Kindergarten Gingerbread House tickets are available. They are 3 for 25 cents.

We ran through our play and no one needed their lines and only a little bit of prompting was necessary. Terrific job kids!!

Please bring your things for the play - red, black or green t-shirts if you are a "Kwanzaa" kid. Those people who said they had antlers we could borrow, hats to choose from for Grandpa and other minor "costuming". Logan and Heather, if you have a dark blue jacket that both postman/men could wear, bring that, too. Megan, apron and cane.

We need these things for Wednesday so that we have time to find the things we don't have yet.

Thursday, December 4, 2008

Day 5 - Thursday, December 4, 2008

Wow!! Eco-Extravaganza was great. Parents ask your kid(s) what they did and learned. Students quiz your parents on what you learned.

NO homework, of course. We Eco-X'd all day.

Very important, though - know your play lines for Monday.

Sell those raffle tickets. The deadline is approaching.

Have a great weekend.

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Tuesday, December 2, 2008 - Day 3

Once again, I am updating from home - the school's internet is not working right. So, apologies for the lateness of the post.

Students have from Ms. Martin - 3 pages to complete in Music for Thursday. And, Josh reminded students that Ms. Sperle wanted some Science done.

From me, no homework related items, but learn your play lines. Next week you should all be off script - so know your lines, when you say them and what you do before, during and after the lines are said.

Reminder #1 - it is necessary for indoor and outdoor footwear and also "winter" clothes.
Reminder #2 - sell those raffle tickets. Some of the teachers were asking about buying a ticket from someone, so go see a couple of teachers.

See you on Thursday for the Eco Extravaganza!

Friday, November 28, 2008

Friday, November 28, 2008 - Day 1

Sorry this is later than usual - internet not working at school, again!

The only "homework" thing to remind students of is to study for the Social Test on Tuesday. It involves the map grids and latitude and longitude sections of our current unit - Determining Position and Direction. Make sure you get latitude lines run east and west, but is recorded in terms of north or south of the equator and longitude lines go north and south, but are recorded in terms of east or west of the Prime Meridian. If you have that straight, you're on your way. Then study all of the terminology we covered and time zone information.

Reminders - play parts for the Christmas Concert were distributed today, learn your lines and make sure you have your script at school every single day.
- Pizza lunch orders are due on Tuesday, December 2nd.
- raffle tickets - by Dec. 10th.
- Eco-Extravaganza on Thursday, December 4th.

Have a great weekend!

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - Day 5

Half way through another week. The time is going so quickly. It is scary to count the days before Christmas break - so don't.

We continue to work on Math together in class as much as possible, but students need to make sure that they are keeping up. For Friday, they need to make sure that all questions up to and including R26 are complete.

There is no other homework from today.

Reminders - students going to volleyball tomorrow - will probably not be back quite in time to catch the bus, so be prepared to come and pick them up if you live out of town.
Sell those raffle tickets. The sold ticket stubs and money all have to be in by December 10th.
Pizza lunch forms must be in by December 2nd.

Good job students staying on top of all of the things that are going on.

Lastly, forms called ROA's which are Record of Adaptations were sent home with any student who receives any kind of change to their regular programming. Sask Learning requires parent signatures on these forms and they must be back tomorrow, as Sask Learning wants them on Friday. Beauracracy!!

Thanks, again.

Monday, November 24, 2008

Hello,
Today, we completed R22, R23 & R24 in Math. Multiples are going well. Social map assignment is due for Wednesday, as is the rough copy of the Health paragraph on self-esteem.

Please remember - Report Cards and blue PPP sheets need to be signed and returned asap.
- toy raffle gifts need to be in by this Wednesday, if at all possible.
- raffle tickets must be sold and all money and ticket stubs to be in by
December 10th. Everyone must do their part, as this trip is for everyone.
- Pizza lunch forms went home and are due back on Dec. 2nd for the lunch
on Dec. 9th.
- Christmas concert date is Thursday, December 18th.

Lastly, but not least important - Elementary Volleyball tournament in Wilkie on Thursday. All day. Students will be back in time for buses at 3:15.

Have a good evening.

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

Day 1 - Wednesday, November 19, 2008

For today, there should be no homework from my classes, unless, of course, you were absent.
Then, new Math booklet section on Multiples, Factors, LCM, GCF, Prime & Composite Numbers. We read the Divisibility Rules and completed the pages on Multiples of 2 and Multiples of 3 (be careful!!).
Then, in Health there are notes to get from someone and in Social - a new map assignment. See me Monday for that. It is easier than the last one.

See your Parents at Interviews tonight and tomorrow.

Remember the toy basket fundraiser and No School on Friday.

Monday, November 17, 2008

Monday, November 17, 2008 - Day 5

Hello and welcome to another busy week.

Report Cards went home today. Please look for enclosures for your interview time and possibly from the Student Services Teacher (Ms. Shepherd).

School clothing orders also were sent.

Assembly tomorrow and Thursday is "yellow" spirit day.

No homework from Math, Social or Health today.

See you on Wednesday :) ! P.S. No school for students on Friday - PD for Teachers.

Thursday, November 13, 2008

Day 3 - Thursday, November 13, 2008

It's been a long time since I last logged on. There are still some students who need to finish Math - Sums and Differences & Compensating pages. I need marks for your report cards. These people know who they are and their books must be handed in tomorrow - yes, Friday - in order for them to be corrected in time for marks to be put into the Report Cards.

For 3 people - Social Studies Mapping Activity 5 must be done for Monday, too.

Lamontagne orders are in and a note went home today advising when pick up can be made. The orders are in the old "cadet" room down by the grade 3 & 4 classrooms.

Our next Spirit Day is Thursday, November 20th. Students are to wear a yellow ribbon or some yellow clothing - to show support for the men and women fighting in wars or in peace keeping missions in the hope that they return home safely.

Library class is on Monday, November 17, so please be sure your books are at school then.

That's all for now.

Friday, November 7, 2008

Friday, November 7, 2008 - Day 1

Another week is behind us. Time flies when you are having fun and very busy.

Today, the students who participated in the Remembrance Day Service did an outstanding job. Those who were observers showed respect and remained quiet during the service. We appreciate that. Then, there were the many grade 6's who took their noon recess to stack and put away chairs, take down decorations, put away mats. They were quick and efficient. Thank you all.

Math today we learned about compensation in estimating. There is a sheet to complete using that skill. The last 4 pages in the Sums and Differences booklet (plus any unfinished pages) must be completed for next Thursday. Remember, you are aiming high for at least an 80%. So no more than 2 or 3 mistakes per page will keep you up there. Be careful, be neat.

Social Studies mapping Activity 5 also needs to be close to completion for Thursday. You will only have about 10 minutes to finish everything up.

Book Orders are due on Wednesday. I will pick them up at the end of the day.

Have a good lo-o-o-n-n-g-g weekend. Come back refreshed.

Chat with you next week.

Wednesday, November 5, 2008

Wednesday, November 5, 2008 - Day 5

Another day has zipped by.

Math - the next 4 pages of Sums and Differences Math was instructed today, so by Friday, only the last 4 pages should remain. Some students have already finished the booklet - good for you!

Social Studies - we worked on the Island Activity 5 - p. 60 - creating our own island with 10 towns or cities and using the coordinates of latitude and longitude to locate them. There will only be a short amount of time in Friday's class to finish these up. So make sure your question and answer sheets are complete.

There are still some Parent Teacher Interview forms that need to come back by tomorrow.

Book orders (4 in all) will be going home tomorrow and are due back on Wednesday, November 12th.

Thanks for your time.

Monday, November 3, 2008

Day 3, Monday, November 3, 2008

Sorry for the lateness of this post. The internet was down all day at school and I only just am able to get to this from home, now.

A letter and attached request form was sent home today with regard to Parent-Teacher conferences. These need to be completed and back to the school by no later than Thursday so that schedules of interview times can be done up. Note the difference for the grade 6 interviews. As I have to also do interviews at Norman Carter (my other school), I have some slightly different times on the 19th and 20th. Also, as Mr. English prefers to not be scheduled, if you do wish to see him, please see him after your scheduled interview times so that the scheduled times don't get too far off track.

Continuing on with the brief refresher unit on Adding and Subtracting in Math 6, the next 4 pages in the booklet are due for Wednesday. Please check that all previous pages and assigned questions are also completed. Remember also, students, the 80% target you are aiming for to not have to write a unit final test. Do your best work! Aim high, you can do it!

That's all for now.

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Thursday, October 30, 2008 - Day 1

We started our short unit on addition and subtraction skills today. The students have a 16 page booklet to be completed. An average of 4 pages per day need to be done. The motivation for the students to do a good, neat, thorough job on these pages is to get 80% or higher on every page. If they can maintain that average, they will not have to write a final test. I am anticipating that this unit will be completed in time to include their marks in the November report cards. This means that all work must be completed no later than Thursday, November 13th.

Students who wish to work ahead and get done sooner will not be discouraged from that. Once they are done the booklet and corrections, they will be given options of Math computer games, Math board-type games or some other acceptable "free-time" activity.

Students should have sufficient time in class to complete the required number of pages if they make very good use of that time. Otherwise, they will need to complete the work on their own time.

Have fun at the Halloween Family Dance tonight and happy "treating" on Friday. Be safe.

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

Tuesday, October 28, 2008 - Day 5

We're back! It was a busy day of catching up for the students who were away or sick last week, but we made lots of progress.
Today, in Math, we started our brief addition and subtraction unit. There may be a couple of students with a bit of homework, but not many. Help your child to stay sharp on their facts by doing a 30 second drill of addition or subtraction facts while you travel somewhere or "do dishes", etc. There are also excellent sites online that give a timed practice on the facts. Check out Math Drills.com or Fun Brain.com.
Once all of the students have caught up missed tests and I have had a chance to mark them, the students will see their tests and be able to record their marks, however, I will not send these tests home. Rather, I will keep them until interviews and the parents can look at them then.
Ms. Sperle wants you to study for the Science test you have scheduled for Oct. 29th (yes, tomorrow), so study everyone.
See you on Thursday.

Wednesday, October 22, 2008

Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008 - Day 1

Good Day!
Math corrections need to be done by a few students. Everyone needs to study/review for Friday's unit test on Place Value (everything since the beginning of the year).
Make sure you are ready for your Science test for Ms. Sperle. That is on Oct. 29th.

Craft Club meets tomorrow - if you have permission and have paid.

I will be away from school on Friday, Oct. 24th, so, there will be no Blog update then.

Mrs. Soloski

Monday, October 20, 2008

There is also a Science test coming up for Ms. Sperle on Oct. 29th.

Craft Club permission and $ is due Wednesday for Thursday's Craft Club.

Social Test on Monday and all map assignments and questions in What in the World are also due. Ample class time has been given for this.
Health Test on Wednesday and Math on Friday.

Book orders are due tomorrow.
I still need Report Cards and previous Math Tests signed and returned.

A second letter to the parents, from Rhonda Laturnus, on behalf of the parent group trying to organize a year end trip for the sixes will be coming home tomorrow. Ask your child for it, as it requires your input and a return to the school by Tuesday.

Thanks for your attention to these things.

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Tuesday, October 14, 2008 - Day 1

There are lots of things on our list today:

corrections from previous work to be done as well.

Try to stay on top of things, kids. It is a very busy time.

Thursday, October 9, 2008

Day 5 - Thursday, October 9, 2008

Today was a busy day! We started reviewing the place value system in the "tenths" and "hundredths" in Math today. Pages to complete were R42, R43, R44 and R45 (selected questions). If you were absent you are likely doing more questions than those students who were in class as you would have missed all of the instruction and the class/board/oral work. It is to show me (by extra practice) that you understand the concept.

Interim Report cards went home today. In the sixes was a Math test. Both the report card and the Math test need to be signed and returned to school as quickly as possible. Thank you.

Reminder of the parent meeting on Monday at 7 p.m. with regard to fundraising for a year end trip for the sixes.

The Crazy Costume/Hat spirit day is coming up on October 16th. Get in the spirit!!

Have a good Thanksgiving weekend and I will see you on Tuesday. Stay healthy.

Tuesday, October 7, 2008

Tuesday, October 7, 2008 - Day 3

Hi!

No homework!

School picture envelopes due back tomorrow.
Music Test on Thursday.

A letter went home today about a year end trip for the grade 6's. Parent meeting to be held here at the school on Monday at 7 p.m. Please ask your child for it.

Look for Interim Report cards to be coming home on Thursday, too.

Saturday, October 4, 2008

Friday, Oct. 3, 2008 - Day 1

My apologies for not getting this up yesterday. It was a busy day and I had to leave immediately after school and did not get home until late. However, there is no homework or tests upcoming from me.

Reminders: School Picture envelopes must be back by Wednesday, October 8th.
Book Fair starts on Monday and family night is Monday from 6 until 8.

Wednesday, October 1, 2008

Wednesday, October 1, 2008 - Day 5

What a wonderful weather day for fall!! Hopefully everyone got out to enjoy it for a bit.

Because of our upcoming Math test on Friday (place value, estimating and rounding) we did all of our work and correcting in class today. If you have corrections yet to do, please have them done for Friday (doing corrections is also a good way to review) as I will collect everyone's books before the test to correct corrections.

Our Social Studies globe making was fairly successful. If some early explorers looked at some of them, however, they would still believe that the earth is flat.

We still need a few more Meals on Wheels permission forms back, but our first pair went out today and things went well except for waiting for the train.

Ms. Sperle has noted Science homework pages 12, 13, 15 & 17. Plus, there is a Music test on October 9th.

Chat with you on Friday.

Friday, September 26, 2008

Friday, Sept. 26, 2008

The end of another busy week!

The only homework there might be are some corrections on the "estimation" handout that the students worked on Wednesday.

There will be a short test on Place Value and Estimation next Friday (the 3rd of October) for any of you that should practice extra.

I still need the last 4 pages of Meals on Wheels document from several students before I can put you on the October schedule. The permission from your parents is essential. I have to have these by Tuesday, Sept. 30th or I cannot include you for October.

Have a nice long weekend as there is no school for students on Monday.

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

Wed., Sept. 24, 2008

There is a long list of things from today.

Math - some students did not have Monday's work finished on R17 (not acceptable), we did R18
together in class today, but answers to questions 1 and 3 still need to be written in the Place Value booklets. Then, we had an estimating handout sheet (both sides) to practice rounding to the nearest 10 and the nearest 100 and some problem solving. Follow the instructions very carefully.

Social Studies - What in the World? map assignment should be completed to the end of Part E. If you do not have an atlas at home, please be sure to use the ones in the Library on Thursday in order to get these sections done.

Things to Remember - Spirit Day - Beach Day tomorrow;
- Terry Fox "loonie" walk on Friday;
- School Clothing Orders are due on Thursday (25th);
- Craft Club tomorrow also;
- MEALS ON WHEELS volunteer forms and permission must be in by Friday, the 26th, as our first month is October and I need to get a schedule done up.
- No school for the students on Monday.

It is a busy time for everyone - but then, when isn't it??

Monday, September 22, 2008

Day 5, September 22, 2008

Just a quick reminder about Math page R17 for Wednesday. Spend $1,000,000.00 on 3, 4 or 5 items, draw them neatly and put an "estimated" price tag on them. Then on the side, show the calculation of your estimated prices to total $1,000,000.00. Items to choose from - house, vehicles, entertainment electronics, recreational vehicles, groceries, clothing.

Just imagine................!

Spirit Day on Thursday, September 25 - Beach Day!

Thursday, September 18, 2008

Thursday, September 18 - Day 3

It sure was nice that everyone was healthy and able to be here today so that our class photograph included everyone (except Mr. English).

Good luck to the Cross Country team in the Wilkie Meet. Just so that you know, with over half the class gone last class, no homework was assigned, we will catch it up next week. But you will have to work harder, because those who were here did get ahead of you.

Notes went home about Craft Club and a note about Unity Skating Club Registration will go home tomorrow.

Have a good weekend. I am off to Regina on Saturday to cheer on the "green and white" at Taylor Field.

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Day 1 - Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008

The trip out to see the UPS/NWT peas being harvested and have the CTV crew come out from Saskatoon was really neat.

If you get CTV Saskatoon, they will be airing the photo-op tonight (11:30 p.m.) and again on the Farm News tomorrow. So check it out if you can.

As for school work - not much got accomplished in my classes as time was cut short due to our "field" trip. We are starting estimating and rounding and we worked through the R14 page together. Social Studies was more mapping work and none of that was for homework.

Reminders:
  • there are still a few school fees to be brought in;
  • Scholastic Book Orders are due on Thursday, the 18th;
  • School Photographs are on Thursday, the 18th, as well.

That's all for now!

Friday, September 12, 2008

Friday, Sept. 12, 2008 - Day 5

Well, we had a very busy day getting things "caught up". Almost everyone is completely caught up on Math corrections - so if you still have some to do - have them done and in on Monday, please. All other Math was completed in class by everyone. Hooray!

I also still need a few maps from some students for Social Studies. You know who you are, so get them done and in on Monday. After that, it is too late.

A reminder - Scholastic book orders are due on Wednesday and school pictures are on Thursday.

Have a really nice weekend.

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Wednesday, Sept. 10/08 - Day 3

We sure had a busy day. I was delighted to see Kezia returned from her trip and has rejoined our class.

There are still a few student fees, immunization forms and gym locker tag dollars to come in.

Girl Guide information went out today, as well as the first "bunch" of Scholastic book order forms. Since there were three different order forms to go out this month, I have given a due date for orders and money for next Wednesday - Sept. 16th or earlier.

Most of the Math and Social Studies was done in class - but for those who have a bit to finish up, the following are the assignments:
Math - R12 - Part A 1,3,5; Part B and C - all
R13 - all questions, except instead of "three" consecutive numbers, only two are needed in Part C.
Social - map to house (rural or urban) and map of school (inside or outside).

That's all for now.

Monday, September 8, 2008

Monday, Sept. 8/08 - Day 1

I had to be away from school today, but Ms. Braun wrote a note that "the students were really good. "

For anyone who had Math to finish up, the pages were R8, R9 & R10 all questions, R11 Part A - all, Part B (2 & 4 only) and Part C - all. This is due for Tuesday by the end of the day and please hand it into the homework tray.

Social Studies - The Equator and Hemispheres p. 28 activities and Where Is It? p. 30. Does everyone have their street and road maps to their houses ready for display on Wednesday?? Social is due on Wednesday.

See ya later.

Thursday, September 4, 2008

Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008

This week is flying by!
The Math assignment was R6 all questions, R7 A. odds only and B all, plus, of course, any corrections you needed to make from previous work. Practice reading those huge numbers so that you can count your money when you're rich, rich, rich!

Also, on the map making activity in Social Studies, if you need to ask for road names, street names, etc. for your map to your house, get that information noted in your Day Planner for Monday so that you can quickly complete your map in Social class.

Lastly, the Grade 6 Immunization Forms that were sent home today must be back by Sept. 10th. I am totally impressed by the speedy return of Registration forms and Media release forms. We are all flooded by forms and the quick response makes everyone's life a little easier.

Have a great weekend.

Dear Anonymous

Thanks to whoever is reading the blog and posted a comment about when the blog is updated. I must apologize for the lateness in posting the update, yesterday, Sept. 2, but I was having computer issues both at school (at school the site was blocked) and at home (my internet was down) and I could not access my blog until late.

It is my intention to update the blog before I leave the school, but you know computers.....!

It is good to know that someone is checking, though. Thanks.

September 2, 2008 - Day 3

Well, we're at it again. I had a good long weekend spent in Regina and at the Labour Day Football game. I hope yours was equally pleasant as well.

So, for the homework list from today - Music: rhythm and tempo;
Math: corrections on R1 and R2 and assignment - all questions on R3, R4 and R5. Practice how to say those numbers up to the 100 millions and practice how to determine the "value" of each digit. Ex: the 3 in 11,306,789 is in the one hundred thousands place. It's value is three hundred thousand. Practice expanded notation (form) too. 10,000,000 + 1,000,000 + 300,00 + 6,000 + 700 + 80 + 9.

DON'T FORGET - Math homework is always due for the next day. I'll be picking up books tomorrow (Day 4).

Thursday, August 28, 2008

1st Day of School - August 28, 2008 - Day 1

Well, we all got through the first day back to school! Mrs. Soloski almost did a face plant into the carpet when she tripped over someone's foot, but we learned that with 27 students and desks in the room, there is no room to have things in the aisles between the desks. Good lesson!

Be sure to check for all of the forms, notes and letters that were sent home today. There were student accident insurance forms, the note about tomorrow's pancake breakfast, a letter from me about expectations in my grade 6 classes and the address to this blog. A Media Release form to be completed by all students and of huge priority - School Registration forms - to be back tomorrow and no later than Tuesday (if at all possible).

Grade 6's will be storing their gym clothes in the change rooms and Mr. English has purchased name tags for the students at a cost of $2.00 each. Students are to bring their $2.00 and the name tag is theirs forever and will go with them for their grade 7 lockers.

Don't forget - this year's student fees. Grade 6's do not have to pay for their tub rental again if they brought their tub over from grade 5.

Best of all - no homework!!

Have a great long weekend.
